Prague

Prague – the capital of Czech Republic & our first move into “Eastern Europe”.

This was the first real language shock of the trip! The whole journey so far, language wise, has carried a bit of uncertainty and nervousness when it comes to ordering food or asking for things, but the languages—even just the sound of them—have felt more familiar to us. That is, until we boarded our first train to Prague and heard Czech. Nothing sounded familiar anymore.

Prague as a city is insane—a giant maze of spires and beautiful buildings poking out everywhere. When we arrived, the cold air from the river created a thick fog that submerged the stone buildings, and with the lights glowing behind it, it was hard not to feel like you were stepping into a spy movie.

Prague felt very romantic. Lots of good restaurants and little corners to explore. The Old Town had plenty of travelers passing through, but still had so much to offer. I think my favorite part was crossing the Charles Bridge and seeing the view toward the other side of Prague, into Malá Strana. We were graced with sunshine for most of our visit. There are a couple of islands in the river Vltava, and they were great fun to wander around—offering beautiful views of the city from all sides.

We also enjoyed a classical concert of Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, and Handel in one of the city’s beautiful churches, as well as an evening at The Best of Swan Lake ballet. Both of us were so inspired by the ballet. It was a smaller, lower-budget production, but the lead ballerina was incredible. It was amazing to watch her move so gracefully and express so much emotion. We had a wonderful time and would love to see more ballet in the future.
